AT&T, Microsoft open up Azure edge compute service to first customers

Microsoft and AT&T are inviting customers to preview their new Network Edge Compute service over Azure. This follows a strategic alliance signed by the companies in July to work on new 5G, cloud and edge computing services. 

The companies are opening select preview availability for Network Edge Compute, which brings Microsoft Azure cloud services into AT&T network edge locations closer to customers. This means AT&T’s software-defined and virtualized 5G core is capable of delivering Azure services. 

NEC will initially be available for a limited set of select customers in Dallas. Next year, Los Angeles and Atlanta are targeted for select customer availability.

AT&T has started rolling out 5G mmWave services and multi-access edge computing at IBM's Watson Research Center in the US. The operator said the low-latency services will help researchers at the lab develop new solutions for the post-pandemic world of work.

Microsoft announced an expansion of its Azure Edge Zones service, partnering with carriers to connect their 5G networks to its cloud platform. After a first integration with AT&T in Dallas last year, the company plans to launch a new Edge Zone in Los Angeles in June.

AT&T, Deloitte to explore future of learning with 5G

Starting early in 2020, AT&T will add its 5G and Multi-access Edge Compute (MEC) technology to Deloitte University's existing cellular environment. This will result in a communications platform that will help enable DU to explore new technologies and innovations to enhance experiential learning programmes and overall guest experiences. MEC and 5G will be installed at the centre to support specific use cases. The deployment is expected to be completed by summer 2020.

AWS unveils AWS Wavelength for 5G edge computing, new partnerships with Verizon, Vodafone, KDDI, SK Telecom

Amazon Web Services (AWS) made some new announcements at its AWS re:Invent event, first unveiling AWS Wavelength, a system that uses 5G compute and storage at the edge to deliver millisecond latencies. New partnerships with Verizon, Vodafone, KDDI and SK Telecom aim to make the edge service available in the US, Europe, Japan and Korea.

AT&T partners Microsoft for cloud services, edge computing

AT&T has struck another major deal in the IT sector. After IBM, the operator has partnered with Microsoft to expand its cloud operations, both within the company and for customers. Microsoft will be the preferred cloud provider for non-network applications, as part of AT&T's broader public cloud first strategy, and will support AT&T as it consolidates its data centre infrastructure and operations. The companies will also develop joint services, focusing on edge computing and 5G developments.

AT&T, IBM enter multi-year alliance

IBM and AT&T announced a multi-year strategic alliance. Under the agreement, AT&T Communications will use IBM's expertise to modernise AT&T Business Solutions' internal software applications, enabling migrations to the IBM Cloud. In addition, IBM will provide infrastructure to support AT&T Business's applications. AT&T Business will use Red Hat's open source platform to manage workloads and applications. The improvements will allow AT&T Business to better serve enterprise customers.
