AT&T already tested DirecTV Now using mmWave technology in a lab earlier this year, and this is the first time it will be delivered over a 5G connection. The new generation of mobile technology is expected to help the operator meet the growing demand for mobile video, which already makes up over half of all data traffic on its mobile network.
AT&T aims to launch its first commercial 5G services in late 2018. The results of AT&T's trial will be used by the 3GPP to help develop the final 5G standards.
