Insurance companies may not use personal data collected from fitness apps such as Fitbit or Runkeeper, according to a law approved by the Belgian parliament. Furthermore, they may not condition premiums or coverage on a customer's use of such apps, reports Computable.
The law was proposed by the socialist party PS. It wants to ensure that insurers don't start discriminating people based on their health.
Auto insurers use such formulas already. A device installed in the vehicle monitors driving behaviour and the data is used to help determine the amount of the premium.
