Base has only 27,000 i-mode users, although the service was already introduced in October 2002, according to daily newspaper La Libre Belgique. The bad results are to be blamed on the lack of subsidised, and therefore expensive, handsets, the newspaper says. Subsidising handsets is not allowed in Belgium. The Japanese mobile application i-mode has 2 million users outside Japan and Taiwan. About 1 million are subscribers to KPN in Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium, while the same number has subscriptions in France and Italy. The service is due to be introduced in Greece this year.
