Bharti Airtel quarterly revenues up 8%, EBITDA grows 16%
Bharti Airtel reported revenues for its fiscal first quarter to June up 8 percent year-on-year to INR 255.47 billion, led by strong demand for data services in its home market India. EBITDA increased 16 percent to INR 95.91 billion, and the margin rose to 37.5 percent from 34.8 a year ago, driven by improved profitability in both India and Africa.

The company's net profit fell 31 percent year-on-year to INR 14.62 billion, hurt by charges for asset impairments and the new exchange rate regime in Nigeria. Capital expenditure increased 23 percent to INR 49.25 billion, driven by network expansion in India, and operating cash flow was up 10 percent to INR 46.66 billion.

In India, revenues rose 10.3 percent to INR 191.55 billion, with growth of 9.1 percent in mobile, 11.0 percent in residential services, 22.2 percent in digital TV and 10.4 percent in business services. Mobile data revenues jumped 35.1 percent year-on-year to INR 35.25 billion, as the data customer base increased 19.1 percent and traffic rose 54.9 percent. Average data usage per customer rose 28.1 percent, driving an increase in data ARPU to INR 202 from INR 181 a year earlier. Data now accounts for almost 24 percent of mobile revenues. The total mobile customer base in India was down by around 75,000 from March to just under 342 million, but still up 7.5 percent year-on-year.

In Africa, revenues rose 2 percent year-on-year to USD 935 million and were up 3.8 percent after adjusting for divestments. EBITDA jumped 12 percent to USD 210 million, while capital expenditure was down 25 percent to 112 million. Airtel lost over 3.5 million customers in the three months for a total of just under 77 million, hurt by prepaid registration campaigns and other regulatory restrictions in a number of countries plus the sale of its activities in Sierra Leone and Burkina Faso.

Revenue growth in Africa was supported by demand for data services, with data revenues up 31.2 percent to USD 154 million, the data customer base growing 26 percent and data traffic more than doubling year-on-year. Active Airtel Money customers numbered 8.6 million, boosting the total transaction value on the Airtel Money platform by 62 percent to USD 5.1 billion.
