BlackBerry posts USD 89 mln loss after restructuring costs

BlackBerry posted a USD 89 million net loss (USD 0.17 EPS) in its fiscal third quarter to 28 November. The loss reflects USD 38 million in restructuring and acquisition costs, USD 18 million of amortisation of acquired intangibles, USD 14 million of stock compensation and USD 5 million in debentures fair value adjustment. On a non-GAAP basis, BlackBerry made a USD 15 million net loss (USD 0.03).

Some 70 percent of the company’s USD 548 million third quarter revenue was recurring. The revenue breakdown was approximately 40 percent for hardware, 31 percent for service access fees and 29 percent for software and services. BlackBerry’s Adjusted EBITDA came in a USD 114 million and free cash flow at USD 15 million. The company, which completed its acquisitions of AtHoc and Good Technology in the quarter, continues to anticipate positive free cash flow and Adjusted EBITDA going forward.

Executive chairman and CEO John Chen expressed satisfaction with BlackBerry’s progress on strategic priorities, including the good reception of the Android-powered Priv slider phone since its launch in November. The company's 14 percent sequential revenue growth in the third quarter reflects this progress. Enterprise software and other areas of focus all accelerated their growth in the period.

Chen added, “To sustain our current direction, we are stepping up investments to drive continued software growth and the additional Priv launches. I anticipate this will result in sequential revenue growth in our software, hardware and messaging businesses in Q4.”
