BlackBerry sets up new cyber security R&D division called BlackBerry Labs

Global security software and services provider BlackBerry has announced the creation of a new business unit focusing on cyber security R&D called BlackBerry Advanced Technology Development Labs (BlackBerry Labs). 

BlackBerry Labs is led by CTO Charles Eagan and has a team of over 120 software developers, researchers, architects, product leads and security experts. Initial projects will focus on machine learning approaches to security in partnership with BlackBerry's QNX, Enterprise and Cylance business units.

BlackBerry adjusted earnings better than expected as annual sales grow 20%

Blackberry reported a net loss of USD 41 million for its fiscal fourth quarter to February, compared to a profit of USD 51 million a year earlier due to a number of one-time charges for asset writedowns and debt. Over the full year, the company recorded a loss of USD 152 million versus a profit of USD 93 million a year earlier. Adjusted annual earnings fell to USD 0.13 per share from USD 0.24, but were better than the group's guidance of USD 0.08.

BlackBerry lifts adjusted revenues, profit in mixed Q3 helped by Cylance

BlackBerry said revenues for its third quarter to end November rose 18 percent from the year before to USD 267 million, boosted by software and services, which lifted 21 percent to USD 262 million. Adjusted revenues advanced 23 percent to USD 280 million, with software and services up 26 percent. Cylance contributed USD 40 million to revenues and that the operations CEO John Chen said in a post earnings call that Cylance will "no doubt" help drive stronger revenue growth next year, Reuters reported. BlackBerry announces executive leadership promotions

BlackBerry expanded its executive bench with the promotions of BlackBerry Cylance VP John McClurg to BlackBerry chief information security officer (CISO) and Christopher Hummel, BlackBerry VP of IT and Business Application Solutions to BlackBerry chief information officer (CIO), effective 26 October. Both McClurg and Hummel will report directly to John Chen, BlackBerry Executive Chairman and CEO.

BlackBerry trims FY outlook, names chief revenue officer after weak Q2

BlackBerry has trimmed its full-year revenue outlook and announced the appointment of a Chief Revenue Officer at its second-quarter report. Adjusted revenues for the three months to August rose 22 percent year-on-year to USD 221 million. BlackBerry said it expects growth of 23-25 percent over the full year, down from an earlier outlook of 23-27 percent growth, while adjusted earnings should be positive in the fiscal year, compared to breakeven in the past quarter.

BlackBerry to close Israel development centre

BlackBerry is closing down its Israeli development centres with 40 employees in Petah Tikva, Globes reported. BlackBerry founded its development activity in Israel in 2015 on the basis of WatchDox, a start-up that it acquired for USD 100 million. A staff of 20 in the US who have worked on WatchDox' product simultaneously with workers in Israel will continue to maintain the product.
