BlackBerry to stop supporting legacy phone services from 4 January

BlackBerry will end support for classic mobile devices running BlackBerry OS 7.1 or earlier, as well as OS 10, from 4 January. Users will no longer be able to access capabilities such as phone calls, texting, data or emergency 911 access. Users will likely also have issues with Wi-Fi and apps such as BlackBerry World and Desktop manager. The company will also stop support for its PlayBook tablet on 4 January. 

BlackBerry shut down its app store and its Messenger (BBM) service in 2019. The company still operates QNX, an operating system that powers infotainment systems from Toyota, Audi, Honda and other car makers.

BlackBerry issues security warning over older QNX software

BlackBerry has issued a public advisory over older versions of its QNX software. The warning identifies an integer overflow issue with multiple Real Time Operating Systems (RTOS). BlackBerry said it's aware of this matter and can confirm that it does not impact existing or recent versions of the QNX RTOS, but rather versions dating from 2012 and earlier.

TCL said it has entered the Benelux market with four smartphones, available from this week. The company also sells smartphones in the Benelux under the Alcatel smartphone brand. It was the producer of the most recent BlackBerry smartphones, with which it stopped in 2020, and is a licensee of the 'Palm' brand name.

BlackBerry expanded its strategic partnership with Baidu to power Baidu's HD maps with the BlackBerry QNX Neutrino Real-time Operating System (RTOS). In addition, Baidu's HD maps will be mass produced in the forthcoming GAC New Energy Aion models from the EV arm of GAC Group (Guangzhou Automobile Group). The milestones build on the company's January 2018 agreement to make BlackBerry QNX's ISO 26262 ASIL D certified operating system the foundation for Baidu's 'Apollo' autonomous driving open platform.

BlackBerry lifted revenues and narrowed losses in the second quarter, both year-on-year and quarter-on-quarter. CEO John Chen said growth came despite the continuing challenges brought forth by the coronavirus pandemic, boosted by demand for the company's 'Work from Anywhere' services as a major driver for its Spark business. Chen also noted some signs of recovery in auto production and QNX, which is expected to return to a normal run rate by early next year.
