Bouygues Telecom makes live 5G call on 3.5 GHz band in Lyon

French operator Bouygues Telecom has made a live 5G call in the streets of Lyon, one of the urban areas where it is testing the 5G New Radio standard on 3.5GHz spectrum. The call was completed with a 5G-enabled device powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon X50 modem, using radio infrastructure equipped with Ericsson's Massive MIMO Air 6488 antennas.

Lyon is the second large city where Bouygues Telecom is carrying out 5G testing. The operator opened its first 5G pilot in Bordeaux in mid-2017 and had nineteen 5G authorised sites across the Gironde department as of 01 December, according to spectrum agency ANFR.

French operator Bouygues Telecom said that its staff had progressed to a new stage in the 5G pilot taking place in the Lyon metropolitan area, starting live testing with commercially available devices. France has over 38,300 active LTE cell sites, 78 authorised for 5G pilots

The number of LTE sites in operation across mainland France increased by 287 in January to reach 38,330 as of 01 February, according to the latest monthly report from spectrum agency ANFR. The total number of sites authorised but not yet in service stood at 42,643, rising to 44,949 with the inclusion of 2,306 sites in the French overseas territories.

Bouygues Telecom launches promotional mobile plan with unlimited weekend data

Bouygues Telecom announced on its blog the launch of a promotional mobile plan available until 17 February, offering unlimited data at weekends for EUR 14.99 per month. The operator said that the new tariff has been shaped by the suggestions of its 20-member customer committee (Comite-Clients), on which it relies to receive feedback on products and services.

France to finalise 5G auction terms in autumn, award 5G spectrum in early 2020

The French secretary of state responsible for the telecom sector, Agnes Pannier-Runacher, told Le Figaro that the forthcoming 5G spectrum award will be completed in early 2020. Telecom regulator Arcep is expected to set out the terms of the auction in autumn, she added, marking the start of the award process. Meanwhile, the government and the regulator have made more progress in executing the 5G roadmap announced in July 2018, by opening applications for the award of 5G trial spectrum in the 26 GHz band.

France to award 5G trial spectrum in 26 GHz band

The French government and telecom regulator Arcep are inviting interested parties to apply for trial spectrum in the 26 GHz band to create 5G pilot platforms open to other market players. Alongside this call, Arcep is also opening applications for new 5G use cases on all available frequency bands. Applications will be accepted until 31 March.

Orange has launched a competition for start-ups to demonstrate how 5G can contribute to the development of products and services across any type of industry. The '5G Challenge' initiative will select five start-ups that will be invited to present their project at the Viva Technology event taking place in Paris in mid-May.

French LTE cell sites on 1800 MHz frequencies gain narrow lead over 800 MHz band

The number of LTE sites in operation across mainland France increased by 543 in December to reach 38,043 as of 01 January, according to the latest monthly report from spectrum agency ANFR. The total authorised but not yet in service rose by 314 to 42,290. The sites on 1800 MHz frequencies (36,068) have narrowly overtaken those authorised on the 800 MHz band (36,062), which since mid-2016 had been the most commonly used for LTE services.

Arcep gives green light for more 5G pilots in 3.5GHz band

French regulator Arcep has issued several new authorisations to develop 5G pilots in the 3.5 GHz band (3400 - 3800 MHz). SFR will be able to carry out technical tests in Lyon for a six-month period, ending in February. The operator has already deployed eight test sites in the city of Toulouse, under a temporary licence that also covers the city of Nantes.

Bouygues Telecom reaches speed of 2.3 Gbps in live 5G test in Bordeaux

Bouygues Telecom has inaugurated its 5G pilot in the Bordeaux metropolitan area by completing a public demonstration and a live test achieving a download speed of 2.3 Gbps, with an upstream bandwidth of 260 Mbps and a latency of 7.5 milliseconds.
