Burkina Faso authorities shut Facebook over security fears

Burkina Faso authorities have blocked access to Facebook for security reasons, Africanews reported. Government spokesman Alkassoum Maiga said it had no comment on the cause of the blockade, which began on 10 January. Omega Radio quoted the spokesman as saying that if the government has a choice between letting insecurity spread, and taking measures to give it a minimum control over the situation, then the choice seems clear, as the national interest must take precedence.

On 11 January, the government announced the arrest of eight soldiers in connection with a development that the country’s media described as a coup attempt. Internet rights group NetBlocks says there was a significant internet outage on 11 January.
