Canada postpones 3.5 GHz auction until next summer

Canada has decided to postpone its auction of spectrum in the 3,500 MHz band by six months, to ensure the focus remains on the stable provision of telecom services amid the coronavirus pandemic. Innovation Minister Navdeep Bains said the auction, for frequencies that will be used for 5G services, will now take place on 15 June 2021.

Meanwhile, a consultation on the 3800 MHz band will start in August. The government wants interested parties to comment on how additional spectrum could be used to further support Canada’s mobile infrastructure and progress toward the next generation of connectivity.

Finally, Bains said that the first quarterly pricing report on 2-6 GB data plans will become available online in July. The report comes amid the government’s commitment to track progress on the targeted 25 percent reduction in mobile service prices over the next two years.
