Ciena buys Vyatta assets from AT&T to expand virtual routing portfolio

Ciena has agreed to take over the Vyatta virtual routing and switching technology developed by AT&T. It will continue to support the equipment used for AT&T's networks and develop the portfolio further as part of its Adaptive IP portfolio. No financial details of the takeover were closed; the deal is expected to close by the end of the calendar year.

Ciena has agreed to support the Vyatta routing platform in AT&T’s wireless network across multiple 5G use cases, enterprise business services and virtual networks with cloud scalability. Ciena plans to integrate the team of engineering specialists into its Routing and Switching research and development (R&D) organization.

AT&T acquired the Vyatta assets from Broadcom in 2017 as part of efforts to virtualise its network and develop an open-source network OS. As that process nears completion, the operator has been spinning off some of the related technology.

Ciena announced the acquisition alongside its financial results for the fiscal third quarter to July. These showed revenues up slightly to USD 988 million from USD 976 million a year ago, and the net profit jumped to USD 238 million from USD 142 million over the same period. The bottom line benefited from a one-time gain of USD 124 million on an internal transfer of intangible assets outside the US.
