Cisco launches Umi consumer video calls system
Cisco introduced a new product to bring videoconferencing to consumer households, with the Cisco ūmi telepresence system. Umi includes an HD camera, a console and a remote control, which connect to a TV and broadband connection to bring video calls to the TV. Available now for pre-order from Cisco's website, the system will go on sale 14 November in the US for USD 599 plus USD 24.99 per month for a subscription of unlimited video calls and storage. The Umi user interface allows users to make calls, access video messages, manage contacts, and customize their profile and settings. Users can also record their own videos, which they can share on Facebook, YouTube, or via e-mail. Cisco said it expects the service to play a role in connecting consumers with businesses, to enable the delivery of services such as education, health care and financial services. The company has agreed a distribution partnership with Verizon, which will offer Umi to its Fios fibre customers from early next year. Best Buy will also sell the system at its Magnolia Home Theatre stores. Cisco plans a number of marketing events for Umi as well, including a placement on the The Oprah Winfrey Show, a national advertising campaign featuring Ellen Page, and a Cisco ūmi mall tour beginning 10 November.
