Cologne and Dusseldorf set to become Unitymedia's next Gigabit Cities
German cable operator and Liberty Global subsidiary Unitymedia announced that Cologne and Dusseldorf are set to become the next Gigabit Cities as part of the company’s Gigabit City initiative at the 2018 ANGA COM in Cologne. The two cities in North Rhine-Westphalia will follow Bochum and Frankfurt as Unitymedia’s flagship projects for its gigabit roll out, with the first households and companies in Cologne and Dusseldorf set to have access to internet at speeds over 1 Gbps by December 2018.

Unitymedia said it aims to complete this upgrade of its fibre-cable network, including the implementation of the DOCSIS 3.1 transmission standard, and equip 90 percent of households in both cities for gigabit-speed connections by March 2019. New customers in Dusseldorf, the capital of NRW, and Cologne, the first “Gigabit City” in Germany with over 1 million inhabitants, can register for a 24-month gigabit-internet package with Unitymedia for EUR 99.99 per month and receive download speeds of 1 Gbps and upload speeds of 50 Mbps, it said.
