Deutsche Telekom backs Softbank buy of T-Mobile - report

Deutsche Telekom has agreed to a proposal from Japanese operator Softbank to buy T-Mobile US, Kyodo news agency reported citing industry sources. Softbank acquired the US' third-largest mobile operator Sprint last year and has repeatedly said it sees a need for consolidation to combat the country's two largest operators, Verizon and AT&T. According to the Kyodo report, Softbank Chairman Masayoshi Son proposed the takeover in a meeting with top executives of T-Mobile and Deutsche Telekom in mid-May and received a positive response.
