Deutsche Telekom conducts first video call over 5G standalone network

Deutsche Telekom announced it has conducted the first video call over a 5G standalone network. The company installed a standalone antenna in Garching to make the call to Bonn. The call latency was 13 milliseconds.

The operator will upgrade the network in future to further reduce the latency. In Germany, 5G technology still functions as 5G Non-Standalone (5G NSA). This means that today's 5G offering is still technically dependent on a simultaneously available 4G network (LTE). With 5G Standalone, the infrastructure in the core network will be upgraded to cloud-based 5G architecture.

Deutsche Telekom selected Mavenir as the supplier for software applications to run on its defined hardware and the existing Kubernetes-based platform of its German business, ensuring an open architecture approach. As part of the deployment process, the Converged Packet Core was integrated with Telekom's existing multi-vendor access network and other system components.

Volkswagen sets up 5G standalone network at main site in Wolfsburg

German carmaker Volkswagen said it has set up a 5G standalone network at its main plant in Wolfsburg to supply the main production development centre and the pilot hall. Volkswagen is now testing the 5G campus network with a view to its potential expansion for industrial production in the future. The company will test wireless uploading of data to manufactured vehicles. It uses frequencies at 3.7 GHz to 3.8 GHz with 100 MHz bandwidth.

E.ON sets up subsidiary to build 4G, 5G mobile masts on pylons and other assets

German energy provider E.ON has set up a new subsidiary, E.ON TowerCo, to convert electrical power pylons across Germany into radio mast for the 4G and 5G mobile network. E.ON has over 100,000 high and medium voltage masts that can also be used as radio masts. E.ON plans to use its rooftops, its own properties and land to build a new network, too.

German consulting company and technology provider Umlaut said it is installing its first 5G campus network at its headquarters in Aachen using 100 MHz of C-band spectrum. The company is partnering with provider of hardware and software for 5G networks Airspan, and Druid Software, to set up the 5G standalone network.

Deutsche Telekom has signed a partnership agreement with RingCentral to provide cloud communication services. Under the partnership, the companies will combine Deutsche Telekom's networks with RingCentral's Unified Communications as a Service (UCaaS) and Contact Centre as a Service (CCaaS) capabilities.

Deutsche Telekom improves mobile coverage in Wartburgkreis, Giessen, Goettingen districts

Deutsche Telekom said it has expanded its network in the district of Wartburgkreis, Giessen and Goettingen. Telekom has built new mobile sites in Wartburgkreis in the past two months to improve LTE coverage. The mobile sites are located in the municipalities of Gerstungen and Hoerselberg-Hainich. The site in Hoerselberg-Hainich supplies the motorway, while the one in Gerstungen supplies the motorway and railway lines. Telekom now operates 51 mobile sites in the district of Wartburgkreis to cover 94 percent

Deutsche Telekom builds up 5G capacity at 75 mobile sites

Deutsche Telekom said it has built up 5G capacity at 75 sites in the past eight weeks. The company uses Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS) at the mobile sites to enable users to continue surfing over LTE. Telekom has built up LTE capacity at 173 locations, too, and installed 178 new LTE mobile sites.

Oppo updates smartphone for standalone 5G at Vodafone Germany

Oppo announced a partnership with Vodafone Germany, Ericsson and Qualcomm to test a 5G standalone network for commercial use in the cities of Duesseldorf, Muenster and Leipzig. The three German cities are the first in Europe to receive 5G SA coverage. Users of the Oppo's Find X3 Pro will be able to access the network after a software update.

Deutsche Telekom raises global network investment to EUR 18 bln

Deutsche Telekom is increasing the amount of its investment in network infrastructure worldwide to EUR 18.4 billion, and to over EUR 5.5 billion in Germany, chief executive officer Timotheus Hoettges said at the company's AGM. Telekom has invested EUR 36 billion in the past seven years in network infrastructure in Germany alone, up 30 percent compared with the previous seven years, the CEO said in the speech.
