Dish Network has chosen Amazon Web Services as its latest partner to build a 5G network in the US. AWS will be its preferred cloud provider, providing infrastructure for the cloud-based network built on Open RAN standards.
Amazon said the Dish network will launch later this year, starting in Las Vegas. Dish will connect all of its hardware and network management resources through the Amazon cloud, including the 5G core, OSS and BSS.

In addition to providing cloud infrastructure, the choice for AWS is expected to ease applications development for the new network, allowing developers and customers to use standard APIs. Developers can leverage AWS services and partner capabilities in machine learning, analytics and security to optimise their applications, as well as access Amazon's wide range of telecom partners for additional connectivity needs.
The cloud platform also should help Dish develop services such as network slicing and edge computing for business customers. Dish will leverage AWS Local Zones to bring the network infrastructure close to large population, industry and IT centres and deliver low-latency data services. It will also use AWS Outposts to extend the network to on-premises facilities, such as factories and base stations.
