DR Congo grants Liquid Telecom approval to build subsea cable landing station

The Congolese Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (ARPTC) has granted Liquid Telecom a licence to build a subsea cable landing station in the country, Ecofin reported. This new licence is expected to boost competition on a market so far monopolized by Societe Congolaise des Postes et Telecommunications (SCPT).

The new project will improve redundancy, following the cut in the West Africa Cable System (WACS) which deprived DR Congo of internet access for three weeks. The country, which has no redundancy, had to negotiate a connection with Angola to regain access to the internet. Liquid Telecom's landing station is expected to connect DR Congo to the subsea cable Equiano that Google wants to deploy between Africa and Europe.

Konnect Africa to roll out high speed internet to schools in DR Congo

Konnect Africa, an initiative by satellite operator Eutelsat, Schoolap and Flash Services, has announced a Memorandum of Understanding to connect several thousand schools in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to the internet, as part of the Schoolap project. This will provide access to a digital platform of officially recognised educational content and teaching materials.

South Africa's Openserve says it has received confirmation from the cable ship Leon Thevenin that the portion of the SAT3/WASC repair offshore Congo has been completed. This concludes a long and complex restoration after simultaneous breaks to two Atlantic Ocean undersea lines, the South Atlantic 3/West Africa Submarine Cable (SAT3/WASC) and the West African Cable System (WACS).

Repairs on SAT3 and WASC cable systems face further delay

South Africa's Openserve says unfavourable conditions at sea continue to hamper the progress of the vessel and crew undertaking the joint repair of the South Atlantic 3/West Africa Submarine Cable (SAT3/WASC) and the West African Cable System (WACS). Openserve said that as a result of these unforeseen circumstances, the crew will need an extra day of repair activity at the current break point offshore Congo.

The coast-to-coast digital corridor follows the completion of Liquid Telecom's new fibre link running 2,600 kilometres across the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), connecting millions to its 'One Africa' broadband network.

Seacom holds talks with Google for capacity on Equiano cable

Seacom is interested in acquiring capacity on Google's Equiano cable along the west coast to Europe, TechCentral reported. CEO Byron Clatterbuck said Seacom is also paying close attention to plans by Facebook to build a subsea system called Simba that may encircle Africa. Facebook is said to be planning to build Simba in two stages called Simba West and Simba East, and is in talks with telecommunications carriers to invest in the project, according to reports.

Google to build Equiano subsea cable from Portugal to South Africa

The cable will have branching units along the way that can be used to extend connectivity to additional African countries. The first branch is expected to land in Nigeria. The Equiano cable is based on space-division multiplexing (SDM) technology. It will offer approximately 20 times more network capacity than the last cable built to serve this region.
