The German operator said around 900,000 of its customers, out of a total 20 million on the fixed network, were affected by the problems related to certain routers. It's still investigating exactly which routers are affected, as customers are experiencing different problems, ranging from fluctuations in quality to a total lack of internet service.
DT said the varying pattern means that it can't rule out that the routers have been targeted by external parties, making it impossible for the devices to register on the network. The company said it's been working through the night with its router manufacturers and trying multiple solutions to try and rectify the problems.
DT added that despite reports to the contrary, the problem is not focused on metropolitan areas. More people are affected in cities only because of the population distribution, it said.
