Dutch broadband lines grow to 6.65 mln, revenues up 3.4%

The Dutch broadband market rose 0.6 percent, or by 37,400 net additions, in the first quarter to 6.65 million connections, according to Telecompaper’s quarterly broadband report. DSL’s 1.1 percent quarterly decrease was offset by cable growing 1 percent during the quarter and FTTH/B growing almost 6 percent. DSL is still the largest broadband technology with 3.14 million lines, with cable catching up with 2.99 million lines. FTTH/B had a market share of 7.8 percent at the end of Q1. Telecompaper estimates that consumer broadband retail revenues lifted 3.4 percent in Q1 to EUR 478 million.

KPN, including its XS4ALL and Telfort brands, is still the largest broadband provider in the Netherlands with a 40.8 percent share of subscribers, stable compared with the previous quarter. Ziggo was number two with a market share of 26.6 percent, and UPC came third with 15.6 percent of broadband subscribers. For the remainder of the year, broadband connections are expected to grow by 2.6 percent, with cable and fibre growing fast enough to offset DSL’s expected continued decrease.
