Dutch VoIP market grows past 4 million mark
The Dutch fixed telephony market grew by almost 6,700 connections during the first quarter of this year to 6.083 million on 31 March, with a 2.7 percent growth for VoIP subscriptions off-setting a 5.8 percent drop in PSTN/ISDN connections and a 1 percent decrease in Wholesale Line Rental (WLR) users, according to Telecompaper's Dutch Fixed Telephony Q1 2011 report. PSTN/ISDN ended the quarter with 1.594 million, WLR with 394,000 users and Dutch consumer VoIP subscriptions amounted to 4.096 million at the end of March of this year. The growth was driven by cable VoIP, with a 3.8 percent increase during the quarter, while DSL reported a quarterly increase of 1.0 percent compared with a 0.5 percent growth in the fourth quarter. The number of mobile-only households increased to 1.332 million. For the full year, Telecompaper expects the fixed telephony market to grow by 1 percent, driven by a 9 percent growth in VoIP lines, which are expected to the end the year with around 4.35 million. On the VoIP market, KPN is still the leader with a market share of 32.3 percent, despite losing 0.3 percent during the quarter. Ziggo is number two with 29.6 percent and UPC is third with 18.6 percent.
