Elisa, Nokia test 3.5 GHz band for 5G

Elisa and Nokia tested 5G technology on the 3.5 GHz band, claiming this was a first in Europe. The test took place in Rusko, Finland, on 7 April. Achieved data speeds during the test were multiple times higher than existing commercial 4G-based networks, namely 1.5 Gbps with the lowest latency at 1.5 milliseconds at their peak, the companies said in a press release.

In the test, a 5G signal was transmitted on the 3.5 GHz band between a base station and terminal.

In Finland, the 3.5 GHz band will become available on 31 December 2018, after which it will be possible to take it into commercial 5G use. The two companies said 3.5 GHz will be one of the key frequency bands for 5G networks globally.

Elisa joins 4G base stations to fibre in Espoo

Finnish operator Elisa said it has taken a step towards 5G by erecting a 4G mobile base station using the Fibre to the Kerb technology in the Nuottaniemi area of Espoo. Elisa said it is improving its fixed network by introducing fibre to small areas as part of the FTTK/VDSL construction. Alongside these works, 4G mobile base stations are being joined to these fibre grids, to provide faster and better mobile broadband connections for residents and businesses in the area.

Elisa joins Smart Tampere programme

Elisa said it has signed a letter of intent with the City of Tampere to join the Smart Tampere programme. In the first phase, Elisa will build fibre and mobile networks there using the latest technology, to form the basis of a 5G network in future. The aim of the project is to create an experimental environment for researching, testing and deploying technological systems that will improve quality of life for the public and boost the city's appeal to companies and visitors.

Finland's Ficora grants 13 licences for 5G tests

Finnish telecoms regulator Ficora said that it has already granted thirteen radio licences for 5G testing to several different organisations. Licences granted so far have been used for product development, propagation measurements and testing of services, among other things.

Finnish govt sees some 5G use as early as start of 2019

5G frequencies could be in use in Finland as early as the beginning of 2019, according to says Anne Berner, the Minister of Transport and Communications. She was speaking at a seminar held by the ministry and by communications regulator Ficora on 24 May. She called for more focus on developing fibre grids to support 5G, and said the 3.4-3.8 GHz spectrum is essential for the new technology.

Finnish minister to discuss 5G, Northeast cable in China

Minister of Transport and Communications Anne Berner will visit China from 13 to 16 May 2017. She will meet Minister of Transport Li Xiaopeng, Minister of Industry and Information Technology Miao Wei and Director of Civil Aviation Administration Feng Zhenglin. In Beijing, Minister Berner will take part in the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation.

Elisa reaches 8.5 Gbps on Nokia XGS-PON technology

Nokia said that Finnish telecoms operator Elisa has successfully completed a field trial of Nokia's XGS-PON technology, including its 7360 ISAM FX and 7368 ISAM ONT. It said the trial achieved Finland's fastest broadband speeds. Elisa said the pilot was carried out discipline in Ostrobothnia, where five households tested the technology and reached a symmetrical rate of up 8.5 Gbps. The XGS-PON has capabilities for 10 Gbps for both downstream and upstream.

Ficora invites bids for licences for 5G testing

Finnish telecoms regulator Ficora has declared that it will support 5G-related experimentation and testing by flexibly issuing radio licences for 5G trials. It said it may issue short-term licences with durations ranging from a few days to a few years. The European Commission has identified the 3.4-3.8 GHz and the 24-27 GHz bands as 5G pioneer bands in Europe and Ficora will make available spectrum of up to 100 MHz in the former band and up to 1,000 MHz in the latter.

Huawei announced that it's completed field tests on 5G terminals with a wide bandwidth of 200 MHz on the 3.5 GHz band. Sonera confirms plan to launch 5G in 2018 in Helsinki

Anite joins 5G research project 

Anite, a wireless equipment testing technology specialist, joined the 5Gto10G research project led by the Centre for Wireless Communications at the University of Oulu in Finland. Anite will contribute air-interface and channel emulation expertise to the research project alongside other organisations, including Huawei and Nokia. The project will help to progress research into 5G technologies by investigating the radio interface and performing radio channel measurements on frequencies around 10 GHz.
