Ericsson opens 5G Proof of Concept Network, Garage

Ericsson has officially opened the  Ericsson 5G Proof of Concept Network and Ericsson Garage in Aachen, Germany. The 5G Proof of Concept Network connects key 5G trial sites and enables Ericsson to collaborate on research and use case testing involving early 5G technology to establish proofs of concepts for industry.

The use cases being powered by the 5G trial facility include adaptive smart grids, connected self-driving cars and industry factory automation. The Ericsson Garage will  be a critical hub for the '5G for Germany' programme. The garage will provide an incubator space focused on innovation and prototyping.

Ericsson and China Mobile in world's first 5G drone test

Ericsson said it teamed up with China Mobile to conduct the world's first 5G-enabled drone prototype field trial. At the the trial, held in Wuxi in China's Jiangsu province, a drone controlled by the operator's network flew with handovers between cells across multiple sites. Ericsson said the potential use cases for drones could include support for emergency services and emphasised the importance of reactive networks with end-to-end low latency to ensure the safety and reliability of such functions.

LG and Volkswagen develop Connected Car services

LG Electronics (LG) and Volkswagen have announced a close collaboration for research and development of service platforms for connected cars, and have signed a memorandum of understanding. The cooperation is focused on the development of Volkswagen's Cross Over platform, which aims to improve connectivity and user-friendliness of cars. The technical basis of the platform will be the cloud to offer the driver unrestricted access to Smart Home and location-based services from the car.
