Ericsson wins USD 3.5 bln contract for T-Mobile 5G network

Ericsson announced a new USD 3.5 billion contract to support T-Mobile’s nationwide 5G network deployment in the US. Under the deal, Ericsson will provide T-Mobile with the latest 5G New Radio hardware and software, compliant with 3GPP standards.

T-Mobile will leverage Ericsson’s 5G portfolio to expand existing LTE capacity needs while preparing the network for the next generation of technology. The contract also encompasses Ericsson’s dynamic orchestration, business support systems and Ericsson Cloud Core to assist the mobile operator in launching new services.

The 5G hardware and software will include the Ericsson Radio System portfolio, across all spectrum bands available to T-Mobile. Additionally, T-Mobile’s already installed base of Ericsson Radio System radios will be able to run 5G NR technology with remote software installation.

The factory will produce Advanced Antenna System radios to boost mobile network capacity and coverage, including rural coverage, as well as 5G radios for urban areas. The company underlined that both product lines will be necessary for rapid 5G deployments in North America.

T-Mobile US has launched the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G smartphone and started limited 5G service in six cities. The phone runs on 5G in mmWave spectrum in parts of Atlanta, Cleveland, Dallas, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and New York. T-Mobile said customers would not pay extra for accessing the 5G services.

T-Mobile US joined the Puget Sound Energy's (PSE) Green Direct programme, giving the company access to a blend of local wind and solar renewable energy sources, which will be used to power its Bellevue, Washington headquarters with 100 percent renewable energy by 2021. This move will help the carrier save millions of dollars in energy costs, while also putting it one step closer to its RE100 clean energy commitment to use 100 percent renewable energy across the entire company by 2021.
