ETSI approves new Sim card format

The European Telecommunications Standards Institute has approved the new Sim card format, reducing the size of the card by 40 percent compared to the current micro Sim. At a meeting in Osaka, Japan, ETSI's Smart Card Platform Technical Committee agreed on the new fourth form factor (4FF), which measures 12.3mm wide by 8.8mm high and 0.67mm thick. It can be packaged and distributed in a way that is backwards compatible with existing Sim card designs and offers the same functionality as all current Sim cards. The new design will be published in due course in ETSI's TS 102 221 specification, available from the ETSI website. It was unclear from the ETSI's statement whether it had chosen the design favoured by Apple or Nokia. A vote earlier this year on the new design was delayed amid lobbying by the two mobile giants to gain backing for their respective proposals. Macworld reported, citing ETSI committee member Giesecke & Devrient, that it was Apple's design that won approval.
