
The European cable industry grew revenues 4.6 percent in 2016 to EUR 23.45 billion, according to research by IHS released at the Cable Congress in Brussels. Broadband services led the growth, with revenues up 7.5 percent to EUR 7.70 billion and a growing share of 32.8 percent of total revenues. TV revenues were also up 3.7 percent to EUR 10.91 billion, driven by VOD services (+14.1%) and the transition to digital, and accounted for 46.5 percent of total industry revenue. Telephony revenues increased by 2.1 percent in 2016 to EUR 4.83 billion.
The industry reached two-thirds (66.3%) of customers using digital TV last year, or a total 36.40 million, and digital generated 80 percent of all TV revenue. In total, more than 2.7 million revenue-generating units, the industry metric for TV, internet or telephony subscriptions, were added in 2016, to reach 118.24 million across Europe.
