Spanish regional operator Euskaltel has announced an agreement to use the 11,000 telecommunications towers owned by Telefonica’s infrastructure subsidiary Telxius in Spain. Under the terms of the deal, Euskaltel has committed to using an initial 100 towers to substantially expand the reach of its 4G network in the Basque Country and Galicia. Euskaltel added that the sites will also be used to enhance wireless access solutions in rural areas as well as providing specific accesses for businesses.
Euskaltel last year acquired Galician cable provider R for a total of EUR 1.19 billion to create a combined entity with around 800,000 residential and business customers in northern Spain. Telxius was set up by Telefonica earlier this year to manage its global infrastructure, including around 16,000 towers in Spain and four other countries.
