Finnish govt presents 6-point environmental strategy for ICT sector

The Finnish Ministry of Transport and Communications has published a report in English with the title 'Climate and environmental strategy for the ICT sector'. It sets out a six-point strategy, namely to improve energy efficiency of infrastructure, improve energy efficiency in data traffic and software, extend hardwire life and recycling, gather more information on the ecological fallout from ICT, provide public education, and apply new technology to climate problems.

Minister of Transport and Communications Timo Harakka said Finland is seeking to solve climate problems and provide solutions for the whole world by applying its expertise in information and communication technology. The ICT sector consumes an estimated 4-10 percent of global electric power and causes 3-5 percent of greenhouse gas emissions, yet has great potential to cut emissions from other sectors, such as transport.

The six-point strategy will be implemented by various parties, both public and private. The ministry and transport and communications agency Traficom will monitor implementation of the strategy and annual forum will be arranged to support this process.
