Finnish govt sets up working group on ICT sector impact on environment and climate

Finnish Minister of Transport and Communications Sanna Marin has appointed a working group to draw up a climate and environmental strategy for the information and communications technology (ICT) sector. The working group will run from 01 November 2019 to 30 November 2020.

The aim is to form a common view on the climate and environmental impact of the sector in Finland and recommend measures to control them, such as reducing emissions. Environmental effects are generated by data centres, communications networks, end-user devices and use of services. In 2030, more than a fifth of the world's total energy consumption is expected to be taken up by the ICT sector.

The group will be chaired by Paivi Antikainen, director of the Climate and Environment Unit at the Ministry of Transport and Communications. The group includes representatives of ABB, IBM, TrafiCom, Nokia, Telia, Tieto, YLE and many others.

Representatives from the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and Google have also been invited to participate.

The first meeting of the working group will be in November. The group will hear experts and stakeholders. It will issue an interim report in June 2020 and the final report in November 2020.

Telia Company updates environmental targets for 2025

Telia Company has presented new climate goals approved by the Science-Based Targets initiative. Science Based Targets (SBTs) cover the full value chain (scopes 1-3). By 2025, Telia Company will halve emissions from its own operations, cut emissions related to use of sold and leased products by 29 percent, and persuade 72 percent of suppliers, calculated on the basis of emissions, to adopt set science-based targets.

Finnish govt green ICT strategy working group seeks comments on 6-point report by 15 January

The Finnish Ministry of Transport and Communication has published the final report of the working group on a climate and environment strategy for the ICT sector, and seeks comments by 15 January 2021. It sets out six themes to cut the carbon and environmental footprint of the sector and to make full use of the benefits of digitisation. The strategy will be finalised in February and made available in English.

Finnish public wants more information on environmental effects of telecom products and services

A study by the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency, Traficom, found that members of the public require more information about the environmental impact of IT equipment and services. The effects of energy consumption by internet services are clearly more difficult to understand than device lifecycle impact, it said. As many as 68 percent of consumers would change their use of internet services if they had more information.

Finnish govt working group says consumers need information about power use and recycling

A Finnish Ministry of Transport and Communications working group on the environmental and climate impact of the ICT sector in Finland has published an interim report. It said the Finnish sector's power use is quite moderate by global standards but the public needs information about the consumption of different devices and networks. Consumers also need guidance on equipment recycling, it said.

Telia offers EUR 500 mln green hybrid bond to support environmental measures

Telia Company has announced a green hybrid bond with a volume of EUR 500 million to align with its environmental protection goals. The bond has a maturity of 61.25 years with the first reset date after 6.25 years. The coupon is 1.375 percent and the re-offer yield has been set at 1.50 percent.

Tieto extends contract with UPM-Kymmene

Finnish IT company Tieto said it is expanding its collaboration with UPM-Kymmene to cover more than 150 applications. Tieto will continue as UPM's IT service delivery partner but the extended contract scope covers IT application management services for most business areas and functions. These include business applications from leading technology providers like Microsoft, Oracle, Salesforce and SAP.

Finnish govt plans to cut mobile subscription tie-ins, set rules on broadband speed and TV subtitling

The Finnish Ministry of Transport and Communications has begun a consultation on the draft Act on Electronic Communication Services, with a 16 January deadline for comments. Changes include a cut to mobile subscription tie-ins, amendments to minimum broadband speed, TV subtitling obligations, and rules on national call pricing.

Tieto ties up with Tampere city council to make pedestrian road crossings safer

Finnish IT company Tieto said it has tied up with Tampere city council to improve urban traffic safety for pedestrians. Using artificial intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) equipment, the system's algorithms can automatically detect when a pedestrian is planning to cross the road at an intersection, it said. An alert can be relayed to automatic traffic signs.

Norwegian regulator sees drones as option for restoring mobile coverage after emergencies

Norwegian communications regulator Nkom has suggested drones as one option for restoring mobile coverage after incidents, in a report to the Municipal and Modernisation Ministry following the Jolster landslides on 30 July. Nkom director Elisabeth Aarsaether handed the report to cabinet minister Nikolai Astrup at the Norwegian Research Centre (NORCE) drone workshop in Bodo. Satellite facilities are another possibility for temporary service.

Vodafone signs deal to sell Fairphone 3 to EU customers
