Global crowdsource Wi-Fi network Fon has confirmed that it has entered a partnership with Vodafone Spain and Vodafone Italia to launch a community-based Wi-Fi service. The resulting Wi-Fi network will be the largest yet built in Spain and Italy, said Fon. As part of the agreement, Vodafone modems will become part of the Fon network, broadcasting two dedicated Wi-Fi signals, one private and one public, from a single broadband source. Fon specified that there will be no noticeable change in internet speed for those who share, since the private network is always prioritised.
Vodafone Spain will roll out the joint service to its customers this week, with Vodafone Italia launching the following week, said Fon, adding that initial deployments will be completed by summer. In total, there will be more than 2 million Vodafone-Fon hot spots available in Spain and Italy by the end of the year, with Vodafone customers also able to access a further 14 million hot spots in the rest of the world.
