France Telecom sales down 2.7% in Q1, EBITDA falls 8.1%
France Telecom-Orange reported first-quarter revenues down 2.7 percent from a year earlier to EUR 11.23 billion, hurt by a drop in sales in its home market after the entry of Free Mobile as the fourth mobile operator there. Revenues in France dropped 4.0 percent to EUR 5.40 billion, and sales in Poland fell 12.0 percent to EUR 832 million. This was offset by an increase of 2.2 percent in Spain to EUR 981 million, and stable revenues of EUR 2.13 billion in the rest of the world. The company said sales improved in important markets such as Egypt and Cote d'Ivoire, and the higher-than-expected revenues from the roaming contract with Free helped offset the loss of customers in France. The operator's adjusted EBITDA fell 8.1 percent to EUR 3.43 billion, and the margin declined to 31.4 percent from 33.3 a year ago. Capex, excluding licences, edged up 1.2 percent to EUR 1.1 billion, and operating cash flow was down 12 percent to EUR 2.34 billion. The company reiterated its full-year outlook for operating cash flow approaching EUR 8 billion. The group finished March with a total 225.0 million customers (excluding MVNOs), a 5.0 percent increase year-on-year. Mobile customers rose 7.1 percent over the 12 months to 166.2 million, led by as expansion in Africa and the Middle East.
