Free launches Freebox Mini 4k Android TV-based STB
French ISP Free, an Iliad subsidiary, has launched what it claims is the world's first Android TV-based STB supporting 4k TV. The new box will be offered as part of its standard triple-play service at EUR 29.99 per month. 

The two-device system consists of a Freebox mini 4K server and a player. The Freebox Mini 4K supports ADSL2+, VDSL2 and FttH connectivity and its Bluetooth-based intelligent remote control can recognise voice commands. 

Free is supplying the Freebox mini 4K instead of the Freebox Crystal to new customers in fibre and unbundled copper areas. The bundle includes unlimited calls in France and to 100 destinations, access to Google apps including YouTube, and 200 channels, of which nearly 50 in HD. It also features a built-in femtocell for Free Mobile users. Existing subscribers to the Freebox Revolution service pay a supplement of EUR 1.99 to use the Freebox Mini 4K.

Free adds IPTV channels, Full HD VoD

French ISP Free has announced several additions to its IPTV service, including Teva and Paris Premiere in catch-up mode, which expand its catch-up lineup to 70 channels. Bouygues starts beta tests of Android-based Bbox Miami STB

Bouygues Telecom recently ran initial tests of the Android TV-enabled version of its Bbox Miami STB with 300 customers, Frandroid reports. The operator will start recruiting new beta testers in a few days and plans to add 700. Bouygues has kept the basic Android TV user interface, adding IPTV channels and several services. Android TV is offering a new UI for TV, as well as several hundred optimised apps, including games and apps from French publishers.

Iliad Q1 revenue grows 7% on 497,000 customer adds

French telecom operator Iliad, which trades under the Free brand, reported revenue up 7 percent to EUR 1.08 billion in the first quarter, compared with EUR 1.01 billion in the first quarter of 2014. Growth came from mobile, where revenue rose 18 percent to nearly EUR 438 million. The company added 420,000 mobile subscribers and 77,000 landline broadband subscribers in the first quarter. SFR to stop selling Android 4.2 STB on 1 April

French operator Numericable-SFR will stop selling the SFR 'TV decoder with Google Play' product on 1 April, the operator confirmed to Cubic after an initial report in Next Inpact. Customers currently using the Google Play decoder will be able to continue to do so. The decoder ran Android 4.2, the precursor to Android TV, but its old processor was prone to slowdowns and chronic incompatibility problems. Before its acquisition by Numericable, SFR was the first French operator to sell a box with Google inside.

Bouygues to offer Bbox Miami STB to new customers next week

French mobile and broadband operator Bouygues Telecom will start supplying the Android TV-based Bbox Miami STB to all new customers (online, phone, in-store) on 23 March, CEO Martin Bouygues announced by way of a tweet. The device released in January is currently only available to existing customers. Subscribers pay EUR 25.99 for the triple-play package, plus another EUR 8 if their connection uses SFR rather than Bouygues's network.

French ISP Free chose Broadcom's BCM7252 STB SoC for the newly launched Freebox Mini 4k, supporting UHD (4k) Android TV. Free's Android TV set-top box leverages Broadcom's BCM43570 for Bluetooth remote control and high quality 2x2 802.11ac Wi-Fi streaming and connectivity to create an intuitive TV experience based on Android apps and games from Google Play, alongside helpful features such as voice search and Google Cast.

Free does not see French consolidation, silent on Base

Iliad founder Xavier Niel reaffirmed at the company's results presentation that he does not believe in a French telecom sector consolidation scenario, despite ongoing reports that Iliad or Numericable-SFR may try to buy Bouygues Telecom, Les Echos reports. Iliad raises profit, sales on strong customer additions

French telecom group Iliad, whose main asset is broadband operator Free, reported revenue up 11 percent to EUR 4.17 billion in 2014, ahead of its initial target and compared with EUR 3.75 billion a year earlier. Free adds two mobile lines to home broadband, mobile deal

French ISP Free has increased the number of a household's members offered a Free mobile discount to four in each Freebox home. Such customers pay EUR 15.99 instead of EUR 19.99 for their 4G mobile plan, including unlimited calls nationally and to 100 destinations, plus unlimited SMS/MMS and 20 GB of mobile data a month. French operator Bouygues Telecom has started selling the Android-based Bbox Miami STB and service online, costing EUR 25.99 a month, with no contact commitment.
