MVNO FreedomPop has announced the launch of its first own-brand smartphone, a dual-SIM Android Marshmallow device costing EUR 59 in Spain and GBP 59 in the UK. The entry-level handset is called FreedomPop V7 and comes with a 5-inch IPS screen, 13MP main camera, 5MP selfie camera, 8GB of memory, 1GB of RAM and a 1.1Ghz quad-core Snapdragon 210 processor. The FreedomPop V7 will be sold with a free FreedomPop SIM complete with 100 minutes of VoIP calls, 300 SMS, 200MB of data and zero-rated WhatsApp usage.
Users who want more than the basic free plan can either upgrade to a paid FreedomPop plan, use a different SIM, or both, as the phone is dual SIM. “In order to ensure everyone can get access to wireless service, it was important we offer a high-quality, full-featured Android phone at a price anyone can afford,” said FreedomPop’s international president Nicholas Constantinopoulos in a blog post.
The launch comes after FreedomPop last year unveiled an online store called FreedomShop to sell refurbished Android and iOS smartphones, which it said were up to 80 percent cheaper than new models. The MVNO expanded beyond its home market of the US to the UK in September 2015, followed by Spain in July last year and Mexico three months later.
