French supreme court rejects challenge against legitimacy of 5G spectrum award

France's supreme court (Conseil d'Etat) has published a final ruling on the legal challenge launched by two environmental associations against the country’s 5G spectrum auction, which ended in October 2020. Welcoming the decision, telecom regulator Arcep said that the supreme court had rejected all the arguments against the award procedure, under which the country's four network operators have obtained 3.5 GHz spectrum licences. The supreme court published an initial decision on the case in March 2020, when it dismissed an attempt to halt the 5G auction.

French telecom revenues rise 3% in Q2, boosted by mobile services and handset sales

The growth trend in French telecom revenues continued to improve in the three months to June, with the best quarterly increase in over ten years, according to Arcep's latest report. Including ancillary revenues from handset and equipment sales, operators generated EUR 8.84 billion (excluding VAT), up 2.9 percent year-on-year. Out of this total, telecom service revenues progressed by 1.6 percent to EUR 7.83 billion.

French agency reports compliance of 5G smartphones in first RF exposure checks

France's spectrum agency ANFR has implemented RF (Radio Frequency) exposure checks on thirteen 5G smartphones, as part of its ongoing campaign to monitor compliance with the SAR (Specific Absorption Rate) limits set for handsets when carried close to the body. Out of the thirteen smartphones tested, all conformed to current regulation (below 2 W/Kg and 4 W/Kg depending on the body region).

Arcep seeks views on 5G spectrum auction rules in French overseas territories

France's telecom authority Arcep has opened a consultation process on draft award procedures setting the rules of the forthcoming 5G spectrum auctions in Guadeloupe, Martinique, Saint Martin and Saint Barthelemy. The regulator will submit the final versions to the government following the end of the consultation period, on 26 November, and will aim to complete the award of the 15-year licences in the first half of 2022.

French consumer protection association CLCV (Consommation Logement Cadre de Vie) has welcomed a ruling that found Orange guilty of misleading marketing of its 5G plans, reports Capital. France's supreme court (Conseil d'Etat) has published a first decision on the appeal launched by two French associations against the government's decrees setting in motion the country's 5G spectrum auction. As part of the ruling, the judge explained that there was no urgency to justify a suspension of the government's decrees and that the appeal case would be examined by the court before the summer.
