French version of Google tax moves ahead despite opposition

The National Assembly, France’s lower house of parliament, has voted in favour of the so-called ‘Google tax’ proposed by socialist MP Yann Galut, reports Liberation. Put forward as an amendment to the Finance bill, it aims to change the way revenues from big multinational companies are taxed in France, in a move similar to initiatives adopted in Australia and the UK.

While the final adoption remains uncertain, its progression in parliament is a disappointment for finance minister Michel Sapin, who had opposed the amendment stating that it failed to provide the right solution. The measure must still be approved by the Senate, before taking effect in 2018.
