German cable association plans legal action against Vodafone-Unitymedia merger

The association of small cable operators in Germany FRK wants to file legal action with the EU court against the takeover of Unitymedia by Vodafone, Teltarif.de reports. FRK noted that Vodafone's market share after the merger with Unitymedia will reach 81 percent in certain segments. Tele Columbus, the second largest cable network operator, holds 12 percent of the market.

The association intends to apply for legal aid, in case it needs to pay the legal fees for Vodafone and Unitymedia should it lose the case. But even if legal aid is not approved, Schalast believes the companies affected by the merger will help finance the legal expenses. Potential network operators would include NetCologne, Tele Columbus, Wilhelm.tel or EWE Tel.
