Global entertainment market up 9% to USD 97 bln in 2018
The global entertainment market encompassing both theatrical and home video releases reached USD 96.8 billion in 2018, up 9 percent year on year, according to the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA). The 2018 international box office grew to USD 41.1 billion, with global home entertainment increasing by 16 percent to USD 55.7 billion. The latter was driven by streaming video, with global subscriptions surging by 27 percent year on year to 613 million, while international digital sales (digital sales, VOD, and paid subscription services) grew by 34 percent.

Other findings of the MPAA’s survey include the fact that subscriptions to online video services (613 million) surpassed cable subscriptions (556 million) for the first time in 2018 and that digital spending has increased 170 percent globally since 2014.. In the United States, overall spending on home entertainment increased to USD 23.3 billion, up 12 percent over 2017, and Americans now spend 52 percent of their media time on a digital platform.
