Google Fiber introduces home phone service
Google Fiber is adding fixed telephony to its broadband offer in the US. The Fiber Phone service costs USD 10 per month and includes unlimited calls in the US and low rates similar to Google Voice for international calls. Customers can also port an existing number to the service and access services such as call waiting, caller ID and 911. In addition, the service will transcribe voice messages and send them as a text or email. 

Fiber Phone is a cloud-based system, meaning customers will be able to take their number wherever they have internet access, including a mobile phone or computer. Google said it will roll out Fiber Phone in a few areas to start and gradually expand it to all residential customers.

Google Fiber expands with takeover of Webpass

Google said the deal will help accelerate the deployment of fast internet connections for customers across the US. Google looking to launch wireless home broadband service

Google parent company Alphabet is looking at the possibility of using cheaper wireless technology to beam superfast broadband into US homes, executive chairman Eric Schmidt told shareholders during the company's annual meeting, according to the Wall Street Journal. "There appear to be wireless solutions that are point to point that are inexpensive now because of the improvements in semiconductors," he said, adding that "these point to point solutions are now cheaper than digging up your garden and so forth.

Google adds cast technology to Fiber TV box

Google is integrating its cast technology into its Fiber TV box for customers of its fibre broadband service in the US. Google Cast, the same technology behind its Chromecast device, allows users to 'cast' apps and content from their phone or tablet onto the TV screen. The mobile device needs to be connected to the home Wi-Fi network for the system to work over the Fiber TV box.

Dutch fixed telephony subscribers grow 1.2%

The Dutch fixed telephony market grew by 1.2 percent during 2015 to end the year with 6.3 million lines, according to Telecompaper's latest Dutch Fixed Telephony Market report. The market continues to expand thanks to growth in digital lines, which rose by 4.6 percent during 2015, helping to offset a fifth fewer PSTN/ISDN lines.

LCC to handle 9-1-1 Location Technologies Test Bed

The 9-1-1 Location Technologies Test Bed, an independent entity established by CTIA, announced that LCC Design Services, a Tech Mahindra Company, was selected to administer the indoor 9-1-1 location accuracy test bed. As the independent administrator of the test bed, LCC will develop a process to evaluate the indoor performance of wireless carriers' deployed and new technology vendor's wireless 9-1-1 location accuracy products.

Dutch broadband connections grow 3.1% in 2015

The Dutch broadband market continued to grow during the fourth quarter of 2015 and ended the year with 7.149 million connections, an increase of 3.1 percent compared with 2014, according to the Dutch Broadband 2015 Q4 report from Telecompaper. Compared to September 2015, broadband connections increased by 0.8 percent, as fibre and cable broadband growth offset a decrease in DSL subscribers.

Google Fiber had 53,000 video subscribers at the end of December 2015, 79 percent more than a year earlier, according to brokerage MoffetNathanson, citing figures from the US copyright office. Google Fiber to use existing fibre in San Francisco

Google said it plans to use existing fibre to connect apartments and condos in part of San Francisco to deliver its Google Fiber broadband service. Until recently Google Fiber has been focusing on building fibre networks from scratch, but as it has announced in Huntsville, Alabama, the company will use existing fibre to reach customers more quickly. As part of its work in San Francisco, its latest Google Digital city, the company will connect some public and affordable housing properties for free.

Google has announced that it will open a Google Fiber network in Huntsville, Alabama, using part of the fibre network being built by Huntsville Utilities. The city will join 20 metro areas where Google Fiber is already service customers, designing and building networks or exploring the possibility of building a Google Fiber network.

Google to bring Fiber speeds to public housing properties

Google said it will be bringing gigabit internet service to residents in all public housing properties that it connects with Google Fiber. The announcement, made by Google Fiber VP Dennis Kish, follows a partnership the company inked with ConnectHome last year. Google tests VoIP app for Fiber internet service

Google has asked members of its Fiber Trusted Tester programme to trial a VoIP service called Google Fiber Phone. The new app allows end users to link landline and mobile phones to a single number.
