Google looking to launch wireless home broadband service

Google parent company Alphabet is looking at the possibility of using cheaper wireless technology to beam superfast broadband into US homes, executive chairman Eric Schmidt told shareholders during the company's annual meeting, according to the Wall Street Journal. "There appear to be wireless solutions that are point to point that are inexpensive now because of the improvements in semiconductors," he said, adding that “these point to point solutions are now cheaper than digging up your garden and so forth." The report said Google Fiber has already begun experimenting with the technology in Kansas City and plans to have a test wireless network up and running by year's end.

Schmidt added that Alphabet executives increasingly believe the wireless technology can deliver internet connections at 1 Gbps, equivalent to the speed Google Fiber currently provides through fiber-optic cables in five US cities.
