Google has started rolling out its new Google Pay app for Android, which unites the previous services Android Pay and Google Wallet. The app allows users to load multiple payment and loyalty cards to pay with a smartphone at the point of sale, and Google said it will add soon mobile money transfers as well.
In addition to making payments, the app provides an overview of recent purchases and helps users locate nearby stores or ways to use loyalty cards. Google Pay can also integrate NFC transit passes, starting with cities such as London, Kiev and Portland.
Customers in the US and the UK will be the first to get the ability to send and request money with Google Pay. Google said this feature would be added "in the next few months". In the meantime, the Wallet app has been upgraded and rebranded as Google Pay Send, so existing users can continue using the money transfer features.
The new app is part of Google's overhaul of its payment services, integrating the mobile platforms Android Pay and Google Wallet with an enhanced platform for online payments as well. Since late last year the company has been expanding the Google Pay platform so it's available at more websites and businesses as a payment option.
