Google to begin self-driving car public road tests in summer
Google has announced that it will begin testing its self-driving vehicles on public roads in California this summer. After being put through rigorous testing at its Mountain View facilities to ensure that software and sensors work as intended, Google's self-piloted vehicles will be taken out on to the surrounding public roads, complete with a test driver who can take over at any point. The speed will be limited to a maximum of 25 miles per hour, said Google in blog post announcing the testing. Google previously revealed that its fleet of prototypes had logged nearly a million autonomous miles of cumulative driving at its facilities over six years and had experienced just 11 accidents, each of which was due to human drivers.
