Google to introduce NFC m-payments platform - report

Google is expected to release details about how consumers will be able to make store purchases, redeem coupons, and get loyalty points by waving smartphones in front of a small reader at the checkout counter, The Wall Street Journal reports, citing people familiar with the matter. At an event on to be held on 26 May in New York, Google plans to demonstrate the NFC technology, which is embedded in newer smartphones powered by Google's Android software and that can help turn the devices into an electronic wallet, the same sources added. The program will be rolled out in New York, San Francisco, and potentially other locations, to be later expended across the US. Participating retailers include Macy's, American Eagle Outfitters and the Subway fast-food chain. Retailers that participate in the program will have upgraded terminals at the point of sale that can read the mobile devices and provide special offers.
