Google plans to release in two weeks a software development kit based on Android for makers of wearable devices, such as smartwatches, the Wall Street Journal reports. Google mobile executive Sundar Pichai told the South by Southwest conference that the company plans to release its own smartwatch, which will be manufactured by LG Electronics. Similar to the Nexus line of smartphones that Google makes, the company expects the new device to provide a "vision" for other developers to power their own wearable devices.
Pichai also said that the company had sold "millions" of its TV service Chromecast. The device was first released in the US last summer, and Pichai said Google will make it available in more countries soon. Pichai said that Google is releasing its Android software developer kit for wearable devices well before actual devices hit the market so that the company gets "plenty of feedback" first. Google plans to unveil its smartwatch at a Google developer event in June, Cnet reported last month.
