Google unveils fibre plans in Kansas City
Google announced the start of a demand assessment exercise in Kansas City, where it's rolling out a trial FTTH network. The company divided the city into 'fiberhoods', and each area needs to meet a minimum number of residents signing up for services over the next six weeks before the roll-out in that area goes ahead. Residents can register on Google's website by paying a deposit of USD 10. They can choose from three service packages: 1Gbps internet and Google Fiber TV for USD 120 per month, 1Gbps internet for USD 70 per month and free internet at 5 Mbps plus the USD 300 connection fee (payable in monthly installments of USD 25). With the first two plans the connection fee is waived. Google Fiber TV will offer hundreds of TV channels and on-demand films and series, as well as an eight-tuner 2TB DVR and a free Nexus 7 tablet to use as remote control. It requires a two-year contract.
