Hiber launches trial of satellite powered IoT network Hiberband
Dutch space startup Hiber said it has started trials of its satellite powered IoT network Hiberband, after sending up its first satellites last year. The company wants its small satellites to bring worldwide IoT connectivity, including to Antartica or the middle of the ocean. Its first customers, namely Booking.com, TreatWell and JustEat, say this new market is worth USD 100 billion annually. The trials will take place on every continent and with a number of industries, including agriculture, oil & gas and logistics. Projects will be based in the 90 percent of the world without a network. Over 70 customers have signed up for the Hiberband tests.

Hiber said any industry operating in remote and developing areas can use the network, with early adopters coming from government, environment, transport & logistics, agriculture and mining. Paired with sensors, the IoT network is for example helping partner Royal Eijelkamp monitor soil moisture, others to check crops, and bee farmers to monitor the environment inside hives anywhere on the globe.

Hiberband Direct and Hiberband Via

Hiber will introduce two networks, Hiberband Direct and Hiberband Via. The first will work with a modem and antenna communicating directly with Hiber satellites. The second will, with a gateway system, operate on LoRa, Bluetooth or WiFi. Hiber launched its first two satellites from sites in Sriharikota, India and California, US in November and December 2018. It will be launching its third and fourth satellites in the first quarter of next year, again in Sriharikota.
