HTC takes lead in US smartphone market
HTC took the lead in he US smartphone maket n the third quarter, according to research by Canalys. It estimates thatHTC shipped 5.7 million smartphones in the US under its own brand, giving it almost a quarter of the market, as well as an estimated 70,000 units under the T-Mobile brand. Samsung was leader of the global market, shipping 27.3 million smartphones for a 23 percent market share. In addition, Samsung shipped an estimated 500,000 units worldwide under the Google and T-Mobile brands. Overall, the global smartphone market grew 49 percent year-on-year to 120.4 million units, Canalys estimates. Samsung was also the number one vendor in the regions APAC, Western Europe and Latin America, ahead of Nokia, Apple and Research In Motion respectively. Nokia led in the Chinese market with a 28 percent share. In the US, Samsung ranked second, with shipments of its own-brand devices reaching an estimated 4.9 million units. Apple came third with US smartphone shipments of 4.6 million in the quarter. Canalys estimates the Android OS from Google holds nearly 70 percent of the platform share in the US, compared with 57 percent worldwide.
