HTC announced plans to lay off 1,500 employees in its manufacturing operations in Taiwan by September, out of a total global workforce of 6,450. The company said it agreed a social plan with local labour unions to help the affected employees find work elsewhere, and it's also reviewing its workforce abroad.
The news follows the sale of much of HTC's smartphone business early this year to Google. While the company has continued to release its own devices, including in the VR market, its revenues remain sharply lower, and HTC has struggled to turn a profit.
HTC said the lay-offs will "ensure the production resources align with the seasonal market demand" and that the company can maintain its core competencies in innovation. It's also "actively implementing an innovative production system" that will also involve a "streamlining of operations and strengthen our future competitiveness".
The financial impact of the restructuring was not disclosed.
