Huawei, Google were developing smart speaker before US ban - report

Huawei and Google were working together on a new Huawei-branded smart speaker right before the US government restricted Huawei’s access to American tech suppliers, people familiar with the situation told The Information. The collaboration was suspended in May.

Before the US action, Huawei’s plan was to unveil the new speaker at the IFA show in Berlin this September, the report said. The speaker, powered by Google Assistant, was aimed at markets outside China, and Huawei was hoping to sell it online in the US.

Huawei previously worked with Google on its own hardware, such as the Nexus 6P smartphone. This would have been Huawei's first product in the smart speaker market, competing against Google's own Home device.
