Huawei to build central and southern Mexican shared network

Altan Redes, the consortium entrusted with building and running Mexico’s wholesale 4G shared network (Red Compartida), has announced that Huawei will join Nokia as a technology supplier for the project to roll out infrastructure on the 700MHz band. Huawei will take charge of building the backbone and deploying infrastructure in the central and southern parts of Mexico (regions 6 to 9), with Nokia already confirming that it will cover northern areas (regions 1 to 5) and build the core network including the network operation centre (NOC) and security operation centre (SOC).

In a statement confirming the contracts, Altan Redes managing director Joaquin Coronado said the selection process was highly demanding and took into account the technology, experience, deployment capacity and financial strength of the potential partners. The Altan consortium was awarded a 20-year concession to build and run the network and is committed to covering 30 percent of the population by 31 March 2018 and 92 percent by 2023. Under the terms of the public-private partnership, mobile operators will be able to rent space on the 4G network in exchange for cheap use of high quality spectrum in the 700 MHz band. The project is set to generate a total investment of more than USD 7 billion over nine years, financed by international and local investors ranging from financial institutions and development institutions to industrial partners in Mexico.
