India to offer licenses for 5G trials
India has issued guidelines for 5G trials across all available spectrum bands, without restricting any domestic company from applying for a licence to participate in these trials. According to India’s Department of Communications, Indian entities involved in research and development, manufacturing, as well as telecommunication operators and academia can acquire a licence for up to two years to roll out 5G trials, The Economic Times reports. The government has set a fee of INR 5,000 for the trial licence.

Back in February, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) released a white paper on 'Enabling 5G in India'. Globally, full scale deployment of 5G networks is expected to start by late 2019 or early 2020 for which pilots have already started. India plans to launch 5G services by 2020, along with the rest of the world.

State-owned operator BSNL recently announced plans to launch 5G service trials in partnership with Cisco, Ciena, Coriant, Nokia, Samsung, SoftBank and NTT. BSNL will develop a ‘5G Corridor’ starting from Delhi’s Lutyens’ area. This “5G corridor” is expected to start from the Ministry of Communications premises or Sanchar Bhawan at Ashoka Road to BSNL headquarters at Janpath in New Delhi towards the Connaught Place market. BSNL also plans to deploy a 5G test centre in New Delhi
